Gokhale Bridge Inaugurated in Andheri: A Milestone in Mumbai’s Infrastructure Development

Mumbai, May 11, 2025 – The much-awaited Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge connecting Andheri East and West was inaugurated on Sunday evening, marking a significant milestone in Mumbai’s infrastructural development. The bridge, which had been under construction for 28 months, was opened a full month ahead of its scheduled date, drawing praise from citizens and officials alike.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by Maharashtra's Minister of Information Technology and Cultural Affairs and Guardian Minister of Mumbai Suburban District, Shri Ashish Shelar, who applauded the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for its exceptional coordination and technical execution. He described the project as a "unique example of modern engineering," noting that the bridge would significantly ease traffic congestion and fast-track Mumbai’s urban growth.

Speaking at the event, Shri Shelar highlighted several cutting-edge features of the bridge. “The use of pre-fabricated structures, anti-corrosion steel, and vibration-absorbing joints has made this bridge a benchmark in infrastructure development,” he said. He also commended BMC engineers, workers, and technical experts for completing the project while keeping railway services fully operational.

Present at the inauguration were several dignitaries, including MP Ravindra Waikar, MLAs Amit Satam and Murji Patel, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar, Deputy Commissioner (Infrastructure) Shashank Bhore, and Chief Engineer (Bridges) Uttam Shrote.

MP Ravindra Waikar called for a fresh survey for a new flyover connecting Usha Nala and Wilson Talkies, emphasizing the need for continued development in the area. He also urged authorities to commence work on the proposed Madh-Marve Bridge, which could become another vital link for suburban Mumbai.

MLA Amit Satam praised the successful collaboration between the BMC and Indian Railways, which he credited for the timely completion. “This level of inter-agency cooperation is what Mumbai needs to meet future urban challenges,” he said.

MLA Murji Patel expressed surprise and satisfaction at the bridge opening earlier than the May 31 deadline. “This is a rare example where citizens get the benefit even before the promised date,” he added.

According to Additional Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, the second phase of the Gokhale Bridge is now fully operational. "This bridge will significantly improve traffic from Santa Cruz to Goregaon, giving commuters a smooth, safe, and efficient travel experience,” he said. Despite minor delays in beam installation, parallel work ensured the overall project stayed on track.

He also announced that the Vikhroli Bridge would open by May 31 and the Karnak Bridge by June 10, reinforcing BMC’s commitment to infrastructure improvement before the monsoon.

With modern engineering, early completion, and improved connectivity, the Gokhale Bridge stands as a symbol of Mumbai’s growing commitment to urban transformation.
