“Nation Above Politics”: Shashi Tharoor Leads Modi Govt’s Global Outreach Delegation with Pride
Shashi Tharoor calls it an “honour” to lead the Modi government’s global outreach delegation, putting national interest above party politics. Read his full statement and what it means for Indian diplomacy.

In a move that has sparked both admiration and curiosity in India’s political landscape, Congress leader and renowned diplomat Shashi Tharoor has expressed deep pride in leading a global outreach delegation on behalf of the Modi government. Despite representing the Opposition, Tharoor described the opportunity as a matter of "national honour", emphasizing that when it comes to the global stage, “nation must come above politics.”
Speaking to the media ahead of his departure, Tharoor acknowledged the unusual yet commendable decision of the BJP-led central government to include leaders from opposition parties in such a sensitive and strategic diplomatic mission. "I believe diplomacy is an extension of national interest, and not partisan politics," he stated. "It is an honour to represent my country and contribute to building bridges abroad."
This outreach delegation, comprised of leaders across the political spectrum, aims to strengthen India's global ties, particularly in the spheres of trade, climate cooperation, cultural exchange, and geopolitical alliances. Tharoor, with his long-standing experience in foreign affairs—including his former role as Under-Secretary-General at the United Nations—brings significant expertise and credibility to the delegation.
Many political observers have lauded the government’s decision to include Tharoor. “It reflects maturity and a willingness to build bipartisan consensus on international issues,” said a senior analyst from Delhi. “It’s a strong signal to the world that India's political differences do not interfere with its global responsibilities.”
Tharoor, known for his articulate views and statesman-like approach, also stressed the symbolic importance of this collaboration. “It sends a message that India, irrespective of internal political divisions, speaks with one voice on the global platform,” he said. “This is how true democracies operate—through inclusion, cooperation, and shared vision.”
When asked about potential criticism from his party or sceptics within the political ecosystem, Tharoor remained unfazed. “Those who question this collaboration are missing the larger picture. This is not about supporting a political party—it is about representing a billion voices on the international stage. My allegiance is to the Constitution, to the people of India, and to our shared global future.”
The move also seems aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's evolving foreign policy strategy, which has increasingly emphasized “Team India” in global forums. The inclusion of diverse political voices could enhance India's diplomatic credibility and showcase the nation as a functioning, pluralistic democracy.
While some within the Congress have privately expressed concerns over the optics of cooperation with the ruling party, many have supported Tharoor’s pragmatic approach. A senior Congress functionary, speaking anonymously, said, “Shashi Tharoor’s stature transcends party lines. His involvement in diplomacy adds gravitas to the delegation.”
As the delegation prepares to engage with leaders, diplomats, and global institutions, all eyes are on how this rare display of political unity will play out. Regardless of the outcome, Tharoor’s participation has already sparked a larger conversation: that in times of global challenges, national interest must rise above political rivalry.
