Cyclone Shakti Alert: IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Warning for Mumbai, Pune, Goa & More Cities in Maharashtra

MUMBAI — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cyclone alert for Maharashtra and Goa as Cyclone Shakti intensifies in the Arabian Sea. The alert includes key cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Goa, prompting disaster management authorities and local administrations to step up preparedness measures.

According to the latest IMD bulletin, Cyclone Shakti is expected to bring intense rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds to the western coast starting late Saturday night through Monday. Coastal and ghat areas of Maharashtra are especially vulnerable, with wind speeds forecasted to reach 70–90 km/h in some regions.

Cities on High Alert

The IMD has placed Mumbai and surrounding districts including Thane, Raigad, and Palghar under yellow to orange alert levels, indicating possible flooding, waterlogging, and traffic disruptions. Pune and Nashik are also expected to receive moderate to heavy showers, particularly in hilly terrains.

Goa, a popular tourist destination, is also on alert with state authorities urging residents and tourists to avoid beaches, ferry rides, and water sports over the weekend. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until further notice.

Government and Civic Measures

In response to the warning, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has activated emergency control rooms and is coordinating with local police and disaster management teams. "We are prepared with pumps, rescue boats, and emergency shelters. Citizens are advised to stay indoors during heavy rains," said a BMC spokesperson.

The Maharashtra State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been put on standby across vulnerable districts, while schools and colleges in some coastal areas may be closed temporarily depending on rainfall intensity.

IMD's Forecast and Public Advisory

The IMD stated that Cyclone Shakti may not make direct landfall, but its peripheral impact will result in heavy rainfall and storm surges along the Konkan and Goa coastline. “People should avoid travel during peak rainfall hours, secure loose items on balconies, and report any emergencies to local helplines,” the advisory read.

Climate Implications

Cyclone Shakti is the first major cyclonic system of the 2025 pre-monsoon season, highlighting increasing volatility in the region’s weather patterns. Experts say climate change and rising sea surface temperatures are contributing to the growing frequency and severity of such systems.

As Cyclone Shakti approaches, residents across Mumbai, Pune, and Goa are urged to stay tuned to IMD updates, follow safety protocols, and avoid unnecessary travel.
