Virat Kohli Announces Retirement from Test Cricket: End of a Glorious Era
Cricket legend Virat Kohli has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket, closing a historic chapter marked by passion, leadership, and unmatched batting excellence.

New Delhi, May 12, 2025 – In a heartfelt announcement that sent shockwaves through the cricketing world, Virat Kohli has officially retired from Test cricket, drawing the curtain on one of the most iconic red-ball careers in Indian cricket history.
Kohli, who debuted in 2011 against the West Indies, played 113 Test matches, scoring over 8,700 runs at an average of nearly 50. Known for his aggressive batting style, unrelenting passion, and dynamic leadership, Kohli not only redefined Indian batting but also transformed the team into a dominant force in world cricket.
In a statement released through the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and shared across his social media platforms, Kohli said:
"It’s been an incredible journey wearing the whites for India. Every session, every day in the field has taught me something new. I believe it's time for the next generation to take the legacy forward. Thank you to my teammates, coaches, fans, and my family for the unwavering support throughout this unforgettable journey."
Kohli served as India’s Test captain from 2014 to 2022, during which he led the team to historic victories, including the first-ever Test series win in Australia in 2018–19. Under his leadership, India reached the No. 1 Test ranking and played the inaugural World Test Championship Final.
Tributes began pouring in from all corners of the cricketing world. Former players, international teams, and fans celebrated Kohli’s contribution to the sport, calling him the "heartbeat of Indian cricket" and one of the "greatest modern-day batsmen."
BCCI President Roger Binny stated,
“Virat's passion, fitness, and commitment to Test cricket were unmatched. He inspired a whole generation of cricketers and fans. This is a moment of pride and emotion for Indian cricket.”
While Kohli will continue to play ODIs and T20Is, his retirement from the longest format marks the end of an era that saw grit, glory, and unforgettable performances on the biggest stages.
