Bhopal, May 14, 2025In a significant move underscoring the judiciary's commitment to uphold the dignity of the armed forces, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has directed the state's Director General of Police (DGP) to register a First Information Report (FIR) against BJP minister Kunwar Vijay Shah. The directive comes in response to Shah's controversial remarks referring to Colonel Sofiya Qureshi as a "terrorist's sister" during a public function in Raikunda village.

Colonel Qureshi, a distinguished officer known for her pivotal role in Operation Sindoor—a military initiative targeting terrorist networks in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir—had been actively involved in briefing the media alongside Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

The High Court, taking suo motu cognizance of the matter, emphasized the gravity of Shah's comments, labeling them as "gutter language" that tarnishes the honor of a respected military officer. The court ordered the FIR to be registered under sections 152, 196(1)(b), and 197(a)(c) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), citing endangerment to national unity, promotion of enmity, and harmful assertions. The court further warned that failure to comply with its directive could lead to contempt proceedings against the DGP.

In the wake of the court's order, Minister Shah issued a public apology, stating that his remarks were misinterpreted and expressing deep regret. He claimed to hold more respect for Colonel Qureshi than his own sister and expressed willingness to apologize multiple times.

Despite the apology, the controversy has sparked political turmoil. Congress leader Jeetu Patwari has demanded Shah's resignation, questioning the sincerity of his apology and the BJP's stance on such matters. In an attempt at damage control, several BJP leaders visited Colonel Qureshi's residence, conveying their respect and support. The BJP's state leadership, while acknowledging the issue, has refrained from detailing any disciplinary actions against Shah.

The incident has ignited a broader debate on the responsibility of public officials to maintain decorum and the importance of safeguarding the reputation of the armed forces. As the legal proceedings unfold, the case serves as a reminder of the judiciary's role in holding individuals accountable for actions that may undermine national unity and the integrity of esteemed institutions.
