Beijing/Moscow – Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for strengthened strategic coordination between China and Russia as the two nations face growing geopolitical challenges and Western pressure. Speaking at a high-level diplomatic forum, Xi emphasized the need for Beijing and Moscow to “maintain strategic resolve” and deepen mutual trust to ensure regional stability and global influence.

"China and Russia must remain committed to a multipolar world and resist hegemonic forces," Xi stated during a virtual address, indirectly referencing the increasing tensions with the United States and its allies. He highlighted that the world is undergoing unprecedented changes, and in such times, the strategic partnership between China and Russia is crucial for maintaining global balance.

The remarks come amid a series of bilateral engagements between the two powers, including the recent BRICS and Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summits, where both countries have voiced support for a new international order less dominated by the West. Xi praised the “ever-growing political trust” between the two governments and their shared opposition to “unilateral sanctions” and “external interference.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a reciprocal message, echoed Xi’s sentiments and reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to enhancing military, economic, and technological cooperation with China. “Our partnership is not directed against any third country but is a stabilizing factor in global politics,” Putin said.

Analysts view the deepening ties as a calculated response to global polarization. With increasing sanctions on Russia following the Ukraine conflict and trade barriers on China over issues like Taiwan and technology, both countries are finding common ground in mutual support and strategic resistance.

“Xi’s call is a clear signal that China sees Russia as a long-term partner in reshaping the global order,” says Li Cheng, an expert in international relations at Tsinghua University. “The coordination extends beyond bilateral trade—it’s about defense alignment, energy security, and diplomatic backing at international forums.”

Economically, China remains Russia’s largest trading partner, with energy trade being a key pillar. In 2024, bilateral trade exceeded $240 billion, driven largely by Chinese imports of Russian oil and gas. Militarily, the two countries have also conducted joint naval and air force exercises, showcasing a growing level of trust.

However, the alliance also poses concerns for the West. NATO officials have warned of a potential China-Russia axis that could challenge Western-led institutions and expand influence in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
