PM Modi to Inaugurate Navi Mumbai International Airport on June 1; Flight Operations Expected by August

Mumbai, April 29: In a significant boost to India’s aviation infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on June 1, 2025. The much-anticipated second airport for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is expected to begin commercial flight operations by late July or early August, pending final clearances and trials.
The Navi Mumbai International Airport, being developed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), is a multi-billion-dollar greenfield project and is poised to ease congestion at the overburdened Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai. Once operational, it will serve as a vital hub for both domestic and international air traffic.
Officials associated with the project confirmed that major construction milestones, including the completion of the main runway, terminal buildings, and air traffic control tower, are nearing completion. Trial runs and safety inspections are scheduled to begin in early June, right after the formal inauguration by the Prime Minister.
The airport, strategically located in Navi Mumbai’s Ulwe region, is being developed in multiple phases. In its first phase, NMIA will handle up to 10 million passengers annually, with future expansions set to increase capacity to 90 million over the next two decades. Equipped with cutting-edge infrastructure, including multi-modal transport connectivity via road, metro, and rail, the airport is expected to become a global gateway for the western region of India.
Sources in the Ministry of Civil Aviation have said that DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) approvals and AAI (Airports Authority of India) certifications are underway. If all regulatory checks are cleared on time, commercial airlines could begin operations as early as the end of July.
State and central officials, along with Adani Group representatives, are planning a grand inauguration ceremony, which will include a detailed tour of the facility, digital showcases of future expansion, and potential international collaborations. PM Modi is expected to emphasize the project’s importance in boosting regional connectivity, trade, and tourism.
The NMIA project, initially delayed due to land acquisition issues, environmental clearances, and the COVID-19 pandemic, has now gained momentum under the joint leadership of the Maharashtra government and the central authorities. The airport is projected to create thousands of jobs and play a crucial role in transforming Navi Mumbai into a modern economic hub.
Aviation experts believe that the commissioning of NMIA will significantly decongest Mumbai’s airspace and provide a seamless travel experience for passengers. With modern design, sustainability features, and smart airport technologies, NMIA aims to set new benchmarks in airport efficiency and passenger comfort.
As the countdown to the inauguration begins, Navi Mumbai is preparing to welcome one of India’s largest infrastructure achievements — one that promises to redefine air travel in the country.
