The Central Government has officially clarified that no GST is being levied on UPI transactions over ₹2,000, dismissing circulating reports as “false and misleading.”

In a statement, the Ministry of Finance stated that UPI transactions continue to remain free for consumers, and there is no tax applicable on such digital payments, regardless of the amount. The clarification comes in response to misinformation spreading on social media and certain news platforms.

“There is no proposal to impose GST on UPI transactions. These are baseless rumours and should not be believed,” the ministry said.

The government reiterated its commitment to promoting digital payments and maintaining the cost-free status of UPI for everyday users.
