Mumbai, 23 August 2024 – The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) organized a pivotal event at C.V. Kora Gramodyog Sansthan in Borivali, where KVIC Chairman Shri Manoj Kumar addressed a large gathering of Khadi workers. The event, focused on the Khadi National Flag Workers Dialogue, celebrated the remarkable achievements of the Khadi sector under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and highlighted the transformative impact of the 'Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan' initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In his presidential address, Shri Manoj Kumar praised the significant contributions of Khadi workers to nation-building, particularly their role in the unprecedented success of the 'Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan.' The Chairman shared that the campaign has led to a staggering 1101% increase in the sale of Khadi national flags over the past three years, with total sales exceeding ₹33 crore. This growth has provided substantial additional income for Khadi artisans, who are predominantly women, empowering them and strengthening the Khadi industry’s foundation in rural India.
Reflecting on the broader impact of Khadi on India’s economy, Shri Kumar highlighted that Khadi’s journey towards global recognition and economic empowerment has accelerated since 2014, under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. The sale of Khadi and Village Industries products has multiplied fivefold, reaching ₹1.55 lakh crore in the financial year 2023-24, compared to ₹31,154 crore in 2013-14. This growth has not only boosted the industry’s revenue but also created over 10.17 lakh new jobs, marking a significant milestone in India’s journey towards self-reliance.
Shri Kumar emphasized that Khadi, often referred to as the soul of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, is more than just a fabric—it is a symbol of India’s freedom struggle and a cornerstone of the rural economy. He reaffirmed that Khadi’s resurgence over the past decade has been a testament to its enduring relevance and the unwavering devotion of millions of Indians.
However, Shri Kumar also addressed the challenges faced by the Khadi sector, particularly the recent misleading propaganda aimed at discrediting Khadi. He firmly stated that just as Khadi withstood the pressures of the British during the freedom struggle, it will continue to rise above any attempts to undermine it today. The Chairman assured that the 5 lakh Khadi artisans, 80% of whom are women, are committed to taking Khadi to new heights, supported by Khadi lovers across the nation who will reject any false narratives.
The event was well-attended by local dignitaries, Khadi industry representatives, and citizens, all united in their support for the growth and promotion of the Khadi industry. KVIC officers and employees were also present, underscoring the Commission’s commitment to advancing Khadi as a symbol of national pride and economic empowerment.
Shri Kumar concluded by reiterating that Khadi’s transformation into a globally recognized symbol of India’s heritage is a result of the collective efforts of artisans, industry leaders, and the unwavering support of the government. The Khadi National Flag Workers Dialogue was a resounding success, reinforcing the Commission’s mission to elevate the Khadi industry and instill a deep sense of patriotism across the nation.
